LEARN ABOUT DRY EYE
PREVALENCE:
Based on data from the National Health and Wellness Survey, 6.8 percent of the United States adult population (approximately 16.4 million people) have been diagnosed with Dry Eye Disease
Dry eye is one of the most prevalent ophthalmic disorders, which is influenced by age, gender, systemic conditions, geographic location, climatic conditions and lifestyle.
WHAT IS DRY EYE:
Dry eye is a condition in which your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears produced are not of the correct consistency and evaporate too quickly.
SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYE:
Ocular Discomfort
- feeling sensitive to light
- gritty, sandy feeling
- painful or sore eyes
Visual Disturbances
- Blurred Vision
- Problems reading, driving at night
- Working on a computer, watching TV
Inflammation
- Heavy feeling of eyelids
- Redness of the eye and eyelid margins
- Watery eyes
DRY EYE SYMPTOM TRIGGERS:
- Windy conditions
- Low humidity
- Air Conditioning
Inflammation of the surface of the eye may occur along with dry eye. However, permanent loss of vision from dry eye is uncommon.
TYPES OF DRY EYE:
1)Tear-deficiency dry eye is a disorder in which the lacrimal glands fail to produce enough of the watery component of tears to maintain a healthy, comfortable ocular surface.
2) Evaporative dry eye may result from inflammation of the meibomian glands, also located in the eyelids. These glands make the lipid or oily part of tears that slows evaporation and keeps the tears stable.
CAUSES OF DRY EYE:
Dry eye can be caused, associated with or secondary to:
- Inflammation of the surface or the structures around the eye,
- Any systemic disease or treatment that alters the composition of the tears.
- Thyroid gland conditions such as: Grave’s disease and Hypothyroidism
- History of Cosmetic surgery if the eyelids do not have adequate closure after procedure.
- History of LASIK Refractive surgery
- Dry eye surface can develop or worsen from drops prescribed for the treatment of Glaucoma
- Environmental causes such as low humidity, dusty environments and air conditioning contribute to dry eye
- Aging is a known risk factor for Dry Eye and Meibomian gland dysfunction
- Sjogren’s syndrome an immune disorder characterized by dry eyes and dry mouth
- Contact Lens wear is associated with meibomian gland dysfunction and discomfort due to dryness of ocular surface
- Dermatological conditions like Seborrheic dermatitis and Acne rosacea are known causes of MGD and dryness of the ocular surface
TREATMENT OF DRY EYE:
The conventional approach to the treatment of dry eye is providing lubricating eye drops and ointments.
Disruption of meibomian gland function negatively impacts both the quality and quantity of meibum secreted, which in turn affects ocular surface health through changes in tear film composition. Increased tear evaporation, hyperosmolarity, inflammation, and ocular surface discomfort.
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) is now considered the leading cause of dry eye. According to the published findings of the 2011 International Workshop on MGD.
Eyelivio treatment targets the underlying cause of gland dysfunction and provides great relief of Ocular Discomfort, sensitivity to light, sandy, gritty feeling, painful or sore eyes as well as blurred vison due to dryness of ocular surface.
